Gambling Addiction is Huge in Nevada
March 29th, 2006 by Sarah WhiteI guess it makes sense, what with the easy availability of gambling opportunities in Nevada, but I was nonetheless surprised to learn that Nevada’s rate of gambling addiction is more than three times the national average. Seven percent of the residents of Nevada have gambling problems, and there are too few centers to help them.
A new treatment center for problem gamblers is already turning people away after only beginning to advertise earlier this month. The six-week program involves four group sessions a week. Patients are asked to pay $5 a week toward their treatment, but no one is turned away because of an inability to pay, folks at the center say.
Treatment programs like this help people who haven’t been able to stop gambling on their own or through self-help groups like Gamblers Anonymous.
