High Increase In Student Gambling

May 14th, 2006 by Marsha James

A survey of Nebraska students showed that most are gambling even at the ages of 10 and under. This increased from the last study done in 2003 and officials believes that it is a factor of a few different reasons such as:

  • Poker on television
  • The glamorization of poker
  • Easy access to gambling online

Experts say that unfortunately the gambling gives them the same rush as adults and can make it much easier for them to fall into addiction.

In 2003, the percentage of students who said they gambled in the past year was about 21.8 in sixth grade, rising to 28 percent in 2005. Among eight-graders, the figure rose from 33.8 percent in 2003 to 38 percent in 2005. Among 10th-graders it rose from 36.1 percent in 2003 to 44 percent in 2005. Among 12th-graders it rose from 37.4 percent in 2003 to 46 percent in 2005.

Most frequently they bet on sports, played the lottery, bet on cards and or games of skill and played bingo for money.
