Introduction to H.O.R.S.E Part 2 - Omaha 8 or Better

April 9th, 2008 by James Guill

The next game that I will cover in the H.O.R.S.E rotation is Omaha 8 or Better.  Omaha 8 or better is a split pot game where the highest hand gets half of the pot and a qualifying low hand gets the other half.  A qualifying low hand occurs when there are 5 unique cards in a person’s hand 8 or below.  The best low is a wheel, or a 5 high straight.  If there aren’t any low hands, then the high hand gets the entire pot.

Every player gets dealt 4 cards in Omaha 8 or better.  The remainder of the cards are dealt just like Holdem with a flop, turn, and river.  After the last round of betting, a player must make their best 5 card hand with 2 cards from their hand and three cards from the 5 community cards in the center.  This is one main difference from Texas Holdem where you use the best 5 cards regardless of where they are at.  Also, you do not have to use the same two cards to make both a high and a low hand.  Let’s say for instance you have A2K10 and the board reads 3, 4, 6, K, K.  In this instance you can use the AK for your best high hand, and the A2 for the best low hand.

This blog is just meant to be a brief introduction to Omaha 8 or Better.  There are many books on the subject of Omaha 8 or better as well as numerous articles online on how to play.  I would recommend you read more on this game to learn the nuisances of play.  The next game I will cover regarding H.O.R.S.E will be Limit Razz.
