Which Event Should I Play at the WSOP

So you have decided to play at the World Series of Poker this year. Great! Good luck to you. Now the next decision you make will be equally as important. What event will you play? Each year, people decide to travel out to Vegas to play in the World Series of Poker and get a little bit of a surprise in the form of the schedule. There are over 50 events at the WSOP any given year. What should you play?

Naturally NL Texas Holdem is the most popular game going today, but there are many other games to choose from. There is Stud, Stud 8 or Better, Omaha 8 or Better, PL Omaha, Razz, H.O.R.S.E, Lowball, and even Limit Holdem. With so many games, some people get intimidated easily. The first thing to do is evaluate your poker game. What is your best game? Is NL your best game, or are you perhaps a really fantastic Stud player who is forced to play NL due to lack of Stud games in your area.

The answer to this question is quite simple, play the event you have the best chance of doing well in. Personally, my favorite poker game is Stud 8 or Better, but if you look at my history of professional events, my best results have come in Limit Holdem. As a result, the last two years I have played in the $1500 Limit event. I also cashed in both events so it ended up being the best decision.

Remember, whatever event you decide to play, you will be putting up a significant amount of money. The cheapest buy-in at the WSOP other than the Employees event is $1000. For most that is still a good chunk of change. Most buy-ins average $1500. In addition there are several $2000, $5000, and $10,000 buy-in events. With so much money on the line, it only makes sense to play the event that gives you the best chance to win. Regardless of the event you choose to play, enjoy the experience, and learn a lot. Realistic depth expectations in Blackjack

Ideally when you go into a casino you want 100% depth in the shoe. Obviously that maximizes your advantage over the house when you count; this is especially true when you are using sidecounts.

But that’s not reality. At best – at absolute best your depth will be 85% into the shoe. Most likely you’ll end up somewhere around 75%, or even 70%. Unless you’re stuck playing in Atlantic City; I’ve written before about the problems in playing blackjack there.

And please don’t ask about depth of deal in an online casino. The only reason to even play blackjack in an online casino is to work one of the buy-in bonuses. There is no such thing as depth of deal in an online casino - if you have to ask why, PLEASE do not gamble. Ever.

The new generation of slot machines is flashier, noisier, and will soon be a lot smarter as well — thanks to computer networking that allows casinos to instantly and easily reprogram their machines with a few mouse clicks.

This is a much simpler process than the old-school method:

In the past, changing out a slot machine was a complicated operation and entailed opening it, replacing the computer chip inside, then changing the glass display that markets the game’s theme. The alteration usually took a day and could cost thousands of dollars, from ordering parts to modifying the machine.

Treasure Island casino in Las Vegas is testing this technology, which can adjust “the denominations required to play, payback percentages, even game themes” on the spot.

If the networking is ultimately approved by the state gambling regulators, TI will use it to cater machines to different crowds — “older players and regulars during the day and younger tourists and people with bigger budgets at night.”

What if card counting were allowed?

We know that Las Vegas aggressively bars card counters. Atlantic City lost a lawsuit to the legendary Ken Uston and is required to not bar someone from counting.

But let’s take a comparison of the two games:

In Las Vegas, you can find pretty much any kind of game you want. Some single deck, 2 deck, 4 deck. Good penetration in the shoe.

in Atlantic City, nearly every every blackjack game is 6 or 8 deck, with maybe 50% penetration. Sometimes even 40%!

In other words, not barring card counters means the casinos have to come up with ways in which the game is awful for the counters. (This in itself opens up the ridiculous betting systems using amounts, which we don’t need to get into) In Vegas, yes, you can get removed from one, and therefore all, casinos if you’re marked and put in the book. But in the meantime, you’re in for some excellent games of blackjack.
